Roulette is one of the simplest casino games, and yet it still offers a certain sense of mystery and excitement to gamblers. This is because the game is based truly on chance. All you have to do is place a bet on the number or type of bet that you think will hit, and then watch the spinning wheel and watch the ball bounce around until it settles in a pocket that marks a specific number. If your bet is correct, you win.
Before you start betting, it is important to know the rules of roulette. Each roulette table carries a placard that describes the minimum and maximum bets allowed. Choose a table within your budget and set the size of your betting unit based on your available bankroll. Then start by wagering on “outside” bets (groupings of numbers instead of individual digits). These bets are cheaper and have higher payout odds.
Once the table is cleared of losing bets, you can begin to place your chips on the desired number slots. A dealer (or croupier) will then throw a ball into the rotating wheel and wait for it to catch on a number. After the spin, the croupier will announce that no more bets can be placed. Then, everyone watches the ball as it spins and bounces around until it hits a pocket that matches your bet.
The roulette cylinder was invented in the 17th century by Blaise Pascal, a French physicist, mathematician and philosopher. The game took on its modern form about a century later. The modern roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk slightly convex in shape with a series of metal compartments called separators or frets that are painted alternately black and red. Thirty-six of these compartments on a European roulette wheel are numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36. A 37th compartment, painted green, carries the symbol 0 and two green compartments on an American roulette wheel have symbols 00.
A small white ball is sent spinning by the croupier and will eventually land in one of the number pockets on the wheel. Players bet on the number or types of bets they think will hit by placing their chips on the table map. The table map also shows the different bets that can be made in the game including straight, split, corner and street bets.
